Customer Engineer

Toronto, ON or Remote USA

Buf is building a new paradigm for APIs. We create both open-source and commercial software that enables teams to create, maintain, and consume their Protobuf APIs systematically. We believe Protobuf represents a huge improvement on the industry standard of JSON/REST, and are excited to make Protobuf a reality for all teams, from scrappy startups to leading enterprises. Founded in 2020, we have raised money from some of the world’s premier investors, including Lightspeed, Tiger, and Addition. We are just getting started and would love to have your help.

Responsibilities:

As a Customer Engineer at Buf, you will be responsible for working directly with new, existing, and prospective customers to help them address any technical questions they have while using or evaluating our products. You will utilize your excellent communication skills to provide technical guidance and support to enhance our end-users' experience, whether in-person (or virtually through Zoom) or via email, Zendesk, or Slack. As a member of the Customer Engineering team, you’ll become an expert in Buf’s product suite and frequently collaborate with our engineering and product teams to drive product development, triage customer pain points, and improve Buf’s products.

  • Working directly with our customers to help them use our products effectively
  • Help build out the Customer Engineering team at Buf, and shape how we communicate with our customers
  • Be the voice of the customer to the Engineering team and contribute to the development of new features and products based on customer feedback and data analytics
  • Providing technical guidance and support to our customers to address any issues they encounter
  • Creating and updating technical documentation, including user guides and knowledge base articles

What You Will Achieve:

As a new Customer Engineer at Buf Technologies, you can expect to spend your first few months becoming an expert on our products and getting familiar with our customers. You will work closely with our VP of Business Developer & Operations, our other Customer Engineer, and our Product and Engineering teams to achieve this expertise. Within your first week, you will be shadowing our existing Customer Engineer in customer calls, and over time, start working independently with our customers.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer working on a technical product
  • Proficient with Go (Golang), or another commonly used programming language
  • Interpersonal skills and interest in working directly with customers
  • Experience with gRPC and/or Protocol Buffers: you are a schema-based API design advocate and have lived the pain of using Protobuf without Buf

Bonus:

  • Experience at a developer tools company
  • Customer-facing experience

At Buf, we embrace diversity. We know that diverse teams make great teams, and we encourage people from all backgrounds and life experiences to apply. It is our goal to ensure that our workplace can be anyone’s workplace.
